Phone Tapping Seems Easy

06/14/2010 4:10 PM

I have to say i thought that the newer digital phones could not be tapped.

But it would appear under some circustances it can.

Does anyone know if this is true, or a con?

For digital phones? Seems easier than ever afaict. A phone with internet connectivity is naturally subject to all of the intrusions that can occur with any wifi device.

It's also equipped with a camera and a GPS generally, so these features can be used to add to the "stalking" or whatever. As shown in the video.

Yes this is real. What makes it even more scary is that the feds can get a phone to activate from remote signals. There was a mob boss that was convicted from this method, and also two low level CIA that got spied on with the same trick in Italy.

The moral of the story is that if you don't want people to listen to you, take the battery out of your phone, since it can be turned on remotely once the software is installed. Side note, the info that I have seen on this seems to point to this being a smart phone only problem, and if you can play mp3's you have a smart phone.

This is why you must abandon your cell phone, or any other non-encrypted (strong encryption) wireless communications device, before entering an area where classified work is being performed. There's usually just a bin and a sign outside the room.

Yup, it is possible. Pretty easy even. The key point was made by the reporter at the end of the broadcast... you have to install the application on the handset. This means that you go out to a web site and download it -- or someone takes your phone and does that. So, if you restrict your own web browsing (don't be lured by a "cool" ring tone!) and keep control of your own phone, you are safe.

As noted in several places, using this sort of software is illegal. I am not sure how they are even able to sell it.

If you do ever get infected, best thing to do is return the device to your service provider and get a new phone with a new number -- and keep it very close to you!

Phone tap detectors are able to alert you to possible phone taps. Some can even prevent taps from working. See: http://www.diydefense.com/servlet/the-Counter-Surveillance-cln-Phone-Security/Categories
