Toshiba LCD Display Problem

06/13/2010 6:56 PM

Greetings

I have a Toshiba Regza 32hl67 LCD tv. Recently when the unit is turned on cold the image refresh lags and the image is severely ghosted. For 20-30 minute the image gradually improves and then is fine. I removed the cover and looked for any burnt outcomponents, bad solder joints etc but did not find any. Do any of you have any suggestions as to what the cause could be and how to test. Anybody know where to get a service manual for this unit?

Thanks

Many LCD TVs use 'response time compensation' to speed-up the LCD performance at the pixel level. It's a form of over-driving a pixel to speed up the transition between two different gray levels. Without it, the pixel would respond slower to a change in gray levels, and the overall picture would look smeared, especially so if a fast moving image were displayed where the effect might cause the ghosting you see. This response time compensation is done in the video card driving the LCD. So there may be component on the video card that has become temperature sensitive. You might look into having the video card replaced. (I hope that it is cheaper than buying a new TV.)

While some people say I am cold hearted I am truly warm blooded.

When I say cold I mean the set has not been on for several hours and is at room temp.

I was having a similar issue with my Sony set. I went through it and until I opened up the power supply i couldn't find anything. In the power supply I found 2 capacitors that were popped. not bad enough to look burnt or anything just on the top of them they were pushed up. I replaced the caps and it worked fine after that.

Cost was about 7 bucks for the 2 caps and about an hour or so of my time.

I don't know how far do you feel comfortable to explore, to me it could be power supply problem. Look for swollen electrolitics. FreezeSpray & hair dryer may help to locate the problem module.

I have a pdf on problems related to this chassis but have no idea how to attach it..

a tip how to do it anybody?

All of the caps look good. I even touched up some solder joints that I thought were suspect. Then I did more.

After some research on the web it appears that it may be the digital processor circuit not updating correctly.

What would really help is a schematic. Does anybody have an good resources?

Bob

most TV repairs are now carried out by swapping out either a power supply, processing or driver board. The diagnosis part is deciding which board the problem lies on and ordering it. Even if the faulty components can be identified, usually they can't any longer.

I had enough of TV repairs after 20 years in the trade and got into programming about 5 years back, went back and visited some of my old colleagues a few weeks ago and watched them fix a panasonic viera by swapping out the processor board, much high fiving when it worked and was the first board replaced.

very sad.
