IXGH40N60C2 and IXGH40N60C2D IGBTs

06/13/2010 3:32 AM

I have stepper drive that uses ixgh40n60c2 IGBT and I have spare IGBT

ixgh40n60c2D can I use them in the circuit?if not why?

Judging by the part numbers, I would guess that the spare part is rated the same as the original, but what does the "D" suffix denote? Is it a newer generation of the former? Is it the same package?

D suffix means it has a freewheeling diode

The D1 suffix means the part includes a back diode (a HiPerFREDTM fast-recovery diode) across the IGBT, see symbol with the added diode.

Ordinary IGBTs don't have a diode, and can be damaged by even modest reverse voltages. The specs are the same, except two of the capacitance specs increase due to the diode. The charge specs are unchanged, and the graphs look the same.

I'd say you probably can use the part - it's likely your circuit board has discrete diodes anyway, and the new ones will merely supplement them.

BTW, the basic ixgh40n60 part dates back to at least 1996, when it included a TO-3 metal-can version.
