You haven't told us much about your project. Are you to provide proof of concept? Concept only? Existence of compatible technology? Constructible infrastructure? Economic feasibility? Do you need to specify existing equipment?

Remember, here at CR4, we do not mind helping with homework, but we cannot do it for you.

Using your very best grammar, punctuation and spelling (as in complete words, not u for you) tell us in as much detail as possible what you plan to accomplish. That's been covered, but the form is all wrong. None of it should be capitalized. Name the specific appliances you want to control and why. How is it done now?

Then tell us how you would proceed and what materials you would use.

As Doorman said, with homework, we help, we don't do.

I cannot over stress that proper language usage is important. Don't use short hand!!!!!

My first question is...why? Why control "home appliances" using a mobile phone? How often could that possibly be useful to the point that enabling appliances / homes to do so would be worth the added expense and trouble?

I can't imagine being at work and craving toast so badly that I would dial up Mr. Toasty at home to tell it I'd better find 4 pieces freshly-made when I arrive that evening.

An air conditioner is an appliance.

I might want to interupt a scheduled lawn watering.

I may have a guest arrive early, and desire to disable the intruder alarm and open the garage door for them, and then turn on the A/C, and turn off the sprinklers.

I agree, warm toast ready when I get home is a little self-absorbed (maybe even some delusional grandeur), but you never know.

All the examples you listed are possible uses, yes.

But again, would those events occur often enough and with such a ferociously compelling need that people would accept added cost to their appliances and homes to avert what is more likely than not a very minor inconvenience?

Not to mention the far more likely risk that someone else might take control of those appliances, either for pranking purposes or something more sinister.

Technology can be used to do amazing things. But those things don't always make sense to do.

Control of home automation with cellular phone

06/15/2010 1:28 PM

"...that people would accept added cost to their appliances and homes to avert what is more likely than not a very minor inconvenience?" This technology is ubiquitous. You can go to several outlet stores (or shop online) and purchase modules or complete kits that accomplish the tasks listed, and many more. The prices associated, while not monumental, would make several months automobile payments for many people. So, while I have none of these home automation gadgets, there is enough consumer demand in the United States to drive a supply.

"Not to mention the far more likely risk that someone else might take control of those appliances, either for pranking purposes or something more sinister." This is becoming a very real concern, and you are correct in your concern. It is becoming a larger threat every day.

"Technology can be used to do amazing things. But those things don't always make sense to do." It sounds as if you may have heard of my ongoing project to convert my 1988 Econoline Van into a Chick Magnet.

Bottom line to this comment is, I understand your resistance, and to a large extent I agree with you. But this is, at the very least, a good exercise for a student. And, perhaps this student will discover how to overcome some of the security issues, or discover a more universal use.

Now, let's let our Guest poster do a little of his own homework. Please let us know more, using the guidelines from lynlynch in post #2.
