Electricity and Alcohol

06/15/2010 2:37 PM

I surprisingly noticed that I feel slight shock when touch switches after 3 to 4 pegs. Does alcohol increase the conductivity of body?

Ethyl alcohol itself is not very conductive, nor I suspect are any the "contaminants" that flavor your particular beverage of choice.

However...it may be that the alcohol causes you to sweat a bit more, making your skin a tiny bit more conductive.

I would think that alcohol will also make you more likely to touch electrical things that you might otherwise know better than to touch...

Do you really have switches with several tens of volts on them? I'd think the wireman had a few pegs too.

You should not be drinking the polyethylene glycol.

The shocks you are feeling are from the defibrillator!

Don't try touching any electricity item, terminal, when you are drunk.

(Oh!, but how you would know that it is electrical item, when you are drunk)!!!!

Um-what is a peg?. The effects of alcohol consumption on human body conductivity of electron source to nerve endings in the skin is most likely due to alcohol dilating cappillaries which connect veins to nerves- so an increased feeling results- mind you, what you feel may not be felt by anyone else or it may- then again it is probably ALL in your MIND!!!. Thought of measuring switches with micro-voltmeter?.

I looked up "peg" and found it to be a common acronym for polyethylene glycol.

So I thought it was a joke.

A "40" in my part of the world will turn you into a joke.

Increase the Ingress Protection rating of the switches above IP2x, if necessary by replacing them. It won't matter then whether the toucher is drunk or sober.

This may require a "hazardous location" classification. or at least IP 67.

Yes, alcohol increases conductivity (not directly, as alcohol is converted to glucose and other sugars immediately upon ingestion - it is a biocide, after all). Some other factors which also increase conductivity include fatigue, perspiration and some nutritional supplements.

I believe alcohol will definitely affect how you conduct yourself, but I'm not sure how it will change how you conduct electricity.
