Power Cable Selection

06/15/2010 3:12 PM

As we know, there are following things which are considered when we select a power cable for a motorize load

i.e:

· Cable laying method (under ground/in cable tray etc)

· Length of cable

· Load current

· Voltage drop etc

Is there any thumb rule for selecting a power cable that is near to the exact (calculated)

For example:

What will be the size of power cable for a 3-phase motor having FLA=100,440V,distance from MCC is 100 feet

For me if a cable like this fails you have so many problems.

I always overate cable by as much as I can and if you have a fault you can destroy the whole system and more.

A motor will draw more current on start up and then it depends on load.

You can measure or calculate the resistance of your system / wires from manufactures data but until completely built you can not be sure of all connections.

So as I say overate from any calculations you make...it is safer and will last longer.

There is many standards and calculators on the www's I use American yacht standards as they have the harshest environments.

i you to choose cables for this i think it is better you would refer to a standard ampacities, allowable voltage drops that will satisfy your needs..

you could use some software for this..

for the simulation i have made you could use 1/0 AWG cable that is if you have 440V fixed source..

General guides, de-rating and sizing information are usually available on the cable manufacturer's website. Additionally the information can be found in the applicable local electrical standard you should be working to.

I personally find cable manufacturer's websites a good place to start.

Additionally you can try a search of CR4 for more details and website links (as this type of question has been answered many times before).
