How to Synchronies two DG sets

06/17/2010 1:31 AM

Hi

I've 2 DG sets. one is of KIRLOSKER make (600 KVA) & other is of COMMEENS make (380KVA). Presently 600kva DG set is running & i've to synchronies it with 380kva set.

So how to synchronies these 2 DG sets.

Pl Suggest.

synchronising two generators is serious enough not to be discussed in a forum. you should not attempt to do so if you have any knowledge or experience with synchronizing issues. better to hire an experienced technician/ engineer to do the job

It is not important both generators should have same kVA rating but to parallel two generator you must consider these conditions:

1- The two generator must have the same rms line voltages
2- The phase sequence must be the same in the two generator
3- The two a phases must have the same phase angle
4- The frequency of the oncoming generator must be lightly higher than the frequency of the running system

Use synchronising panel.

Use SEL Automatic Synchronizer

two type synchronisation is presently used 1, microprossoser based .2,plc based

low cost is microprossoser based synchronisation.

As mentioned in the thread#1, paralleling two generator sets is a serious and dangerous work.

Furthermore you need a method of proportional load sharing, because the load ratings of the two genarator sets are not equal to each other.

Speed control components for both generators (say Governors) must be compatible for an automatic synchronizer , as well as a load sharing unit.

On the other hand the alternators must have damper cages to be suitable for paralleling.

All above means you need an expert to achieve all this things.

You must be adequately educated if you wish to do it yourself.

I SALUTE THE VARIOUS TECHNICAL ISSUES RAISED. BE GUIDED AS FOLLOWS:

PHASE SEQUENCE, FREQUENCY AND VOLTAGES MUST BE SAME. YOU WILL DEFINITELY NEED EXPERT SINCE YOU HAVE NOT DONE IT BEFORE BECAUSE A PHENOMENON REFFERRED TO AS REVERSE POWER COULD SET IN, WHICH MIGHT DESTROY THE SETS, PARTICULARLY HE SYNCHROSCOPE AND THE SEMI-CONDUCTORS. THIS COULD LEAD TO LOSS OF WARRANTY OR GUARANTTEE ON THE GEN SETS.

We are assuming the TWO GEN.SETS(EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE DIFFERENT KVA RATES) THEY MUST BE THE SAME VOLTAGE & PHASE / 1PH. 230VAC or 3PH. 208VAC.

Hi - Return: To synchronies any two Diesel Gen. sets, using a V.O.M. that will safely handle the Volt. L1 Output #1 Gen Set to Volt. L1 Output #2 Gen.set. With Output Freq. Meters on both Gen., Sets Reading 60 Hz & and Output Volt @ Normal Output, connect V.O.M to the L1 on each Gen., Set. The farther the two units are from being in Synch., the more the V.O.M. needle will swing from max. volts. to min. volts. Also the Closer they are to being in Synch., the slower the V.O.M. needle will swing from max. volts to min. volts. (because you have two different size Gen. sets, select & start the smaller one to make adjustments on.) Watchin the V.O.M. needle, adjust the smaller unit Diesel Governor very slightly slower. This will change the amount of swing on the V.O.M. needle, if the swing change gets slower & stops for a brief second @ min. reading you are getting closer to being In Synch. Also While You Are Closer To Being In Synch. @ The V.O.M. Needle is Stopping for longer periods, This is when you SWITCH THE TWO UNITS TOGETHER( YOU ARE THAN SWITCHING WHILE THERE IS THE LEAST DIFFERENCE IN BOTH VOLTAGE & FREQUENCY>
