Reversing single phase motor... brushing up on theory?

06/18/2010 4:05 PM

I'm trying to repair a car lift ramp which is powered by a single phase AC motor, the motor has two capacitors on it. Just need to get my head around the 4 wires that go to the motor to eliminate them from my search for the fault :)

When the contactors are 'pulled in' to make the ramp go up, the terminals are:-

1= Live, 2= Neutral, 3= Neutral, 4= Live

Am i right in thinking that 1&2 could be start windings and 3&4 run windings? because when the contactors are pulled in to make the ramp go down, the terminals are:-

1= Neutral, 2= Live, 3= Neutral, 4= Live,

So the run circuit is the same for both but the start is reversed depending on which way you want the motor to rotate, therefore the ramp to move?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated, i am currently in an internet cafe and don't have time to register (hence 'Guest') but i shall be doing so as soon as my home internet is fixed :(

Many Thanks,

Ray

Good analysis. Your assumption is correct.

As posted earlier, your assumption is correct.

Thanks though for pointing out a very good reason why a "guest" should be allowed to post a question.

The Start Winding is the one connected to the Capacitor. To reverse, you can reverse the Start winding or The Run Winding (not both). Therefore, your assumption can be right or wrong in concluding that 1-2 is the start winding.

You have 2 capacitors: if they are in parallel, then it is as if you had 1 but doubled for size. If they have different connections, then one is to boost at the start while the 2nd is kept in the circuit permanently. The run winding goes from Line to Neutral without passing by a capacitor. just check for information.
