What happens if you connect power to the input of the inverter?

Does the manufacturer's literature state that power can be applied to the output of the inverter?

If not, the state of the drives to the IBGTs is undefined (without knowledge of the circuitry). It may be that the IBGT turned on. With power applied to the output, there would be nothing to limit the current. Hence the soul of the device would leak out - it may have been visible as a small puff of smoke .

Excellent elaboration of the "smoke theory"!

And barely audible as a faint "snap".

(Oops - just noticed I did "IBGT" - twice! )

"Hence the soul of the device would leak out - it may have been visible as a small puff of smoke ."

Gotta love that characterization...

I don't know of any inverter that can withstand having AC applied to the output terminals without significant damage. More than likely once you replace the IGBT you will discover the next failed component up the chain. The last one I worked on, a 250HP ABB ACS550 drive connected by an HVAC technician, had failed components all the way up the power chain and into the control boards! It would have been cheaper to replace the drive at the outset than repair it one part at a time as we did.

Funny side story to that; He claimed that he had connected it properly right to the bitter end. His reasoning? The terminals in the VFD said "Line" and "Load", the terminals on the motor said "Line", so that's where he connected them. Similarly the terminals on the supply fused disconnect said "Load", so that how he connected them as well! Line-to-Line, Load-to-Load! Made perfect sense to him...

Sounds like a decent burial is in order here, rest It's unfortunate soul.

I had to do this with the victim of a lightning strike.

JRaef,

Interesting, because ABB also makes a somewhat more expensive series of inverters that are designed to survive reverse wiring (power to load side).

I think that IGBTs share the major cost in inverters !

thank to your help with my question

06/22/2010 5:25 AM

thanks very much with my question !

I want to known because IGBT of M240 allows hight volt connect to motor (3 hp). When connect power to output M420 with cable link to motor after that motor run about 6 hours . Power did not suplie to input M420 so IGBT did not work and power couldnt tranfer from input thougth to output by IGBT. May be IGBT has problem ??

This connection diagram is taken from the Micromaster 420 Operating Instructions:

If you connect it any other way, you can expect trouble.
