There are some good links from Craziestozzie..GA to you.
i would like to understand what you mean by efficiency of an inductor... do you mean that 1 or 100% will mean a non-resistive pure inductor ? Also, efficiency is a ratio, therefore a pure number. Can you explain "in terms of EMF"?

Nothing worthwhile can ever be taught, it can only be learnt.
what i mean is the efficiency of a transformer. i have the equation for how the field is generated in the core, but
say you have a transformer that has the same number of turns on the
primary and secondary
the voltage should be the same in the primary and secondary, but the
secondary must not be able to supply as much current as if the primary
was simply hooked up to the load without the transformer.
that is to say, there must be some loss in power in the secondary,
besides the resistance of the coils. thats what i want to calculate
I assume you are referring to hysteresis and eddy current losses contained within the magnetic circuit and that you are after THE formula for efficiency and not a general calculator.
At the top page of this next link, you will see the navigation "back", "up" and "next" and it is here you will find more info and more formulas (which can be re-arranged to find an unknown value) for the efficiency of a transformer I give you initially HERE
