The Foundation Fieldbus website has literature that you can download for free. Check their website www.fieldbus.org. They've got tutorials and wiring guides in pdf format.
Fieldbus installations are very different from the old 4 to 20mA technology. Sure, the cable savings are great and the availability of diagnostics can be helpful. However, there are issues that I believe have contributed to the whitening of my hair. It's no fun when downtime is attributed to instrumentation failure and you happen to be in charge of instrumentation.
We had an installation that gave us problems almost from day one. Last December, we changed some parts to another brand and we haven't had a problem since. The only existing problem is a coriolis flowmeter that can provide multiple variables (mass flow, volumetric flow, density, and temperature). Unfortunately, the device is of an older version and when we upgraded our system, the multi-variable feature disappeared. Therefore, we need to order a new flowmeter to restore the missing data.
I'm not saying what kind of fieldbus it is. I hear all of them have similar problems.
