Hydrogen Generator

02/23/2007 12:31 AM

Lets hope I don't start a flame war with this one. Does anyone have any plans or prints for a small hydrogen generator that I can fuel a small engine with? I am looking for something that is proven to work that I can build that won't cost me an arm and a leg to build.

Hi there.

http://www.goodideacreative.com/wheelockmtn.html

I've bought a couple of download publications here. They are full of useful info and in my opinion well worth the money.

The practical hydrogen one is particularly good.

Next questions:

What is today's efficiency in SolarPanelPVs > Hydrogen Production?Electrolyzer? > Fuel Cell > Engine energy conversion chain?

What would be practical (today's prices) energy source to produce electricity with the Hydrogen support?

you can use a Kipp generator and fill it with caustic and use aluminium to free the hydrogen. They can be made cheaply. Just keep it outside.

Bear in mind that any hydrogen you manufacture will cost almost 20 times the cost of a similar amount of propane.

This is for small lab uses, but can be made larger as needed out of plastic drums and is quite cheap to make. The aluminum scrap you feed it with is the costly part.

Just use scrap aluminum metal that would otherwise not be profitable to recycle. That should come cheap enough. There are safer chemicals to use than any acid. What you will need is a catalyst and water for the formation of aluminum oxide. The O2 will come from the H2O, leaving H2 for you to use as needed. The catalyst would break the electron bonds of the water without being changed itself. Acid will be used up in the process; to keep the reaction generating hydrogen, more would need to be added, and what could you do with the waste by product? Collection of the gas in usable amounts will be another challenge.

scrap aluminum has a ready market of about 80% of the spot price. It varies with purity. Alkali is the cheapest stuff to use. Mercury also works, but has problems.

this stuff works, but is extremely expensive at 4-5 times the cost of pure aluminum, I see it as a racket

Well I did say to use scrap that cannot be recycled. I'll bet you could get most of it for free as no one else will buy it. That would include foil, fine shavings, Dust collector waste, foil/plastic/paper laminates (like food packaging} etc. There is a lot that could be used, if you look around. Most of it in a form too thin to remelt without turning the metal to oxides.

stuff like that is not good feed for a kipp generator. It is best to use metallic feed only. Paper with foil needs a huge volume to generate any appreciable amount of Hydrogen and you would be left with a gluey mess of partially hydrolized paper that would blot up your electrolyte. 50% irony aluminum is OK as dense iron/steel settles well.

Scrap aluminum is graded into categories, extruded, cast, copper free, filings, turnings, irony etc

this site give you an idea.

A cup, a twelve volt battery, two electrodes, an a tube two-way separator flask (or two upside-down tube vessels, one over each electrode). you will figure out the rest.

P.S: How do you intend to maintain the gases (separated from this electrolysis) for further use?

The intent was to feed the hydrogen to a single cylinder engine to act as it's fuel. Shut off the hydrogen generator and the engine dies. Start the hydrogen generator produceing h2 then start gas engine. I wasn't planning any long term storage, use as needed.

Which engine have you chosen to work with?
