Flange design having Rubber RTJ Gasket or O' ring

06/24/2010 3:30 AM

I have a problem in designing of Groove depth (in the RTJ Flange) for Rubber RTJ Gasket or O' Ring and whats about the other mating Flange Face (Should it FF, RF or having some grooves). is there any thumb's rule that Groove Depth should be half of the O' Ring Dia.

O ring manufacturers have excellent design data for this stuff. I would imagine gasket manufacturers do too. Check their websites.

Thanks for the Reply.

I could not find the data about Flange design having Rubber O'ring or Rubber RTJ gasket.

We have to differentiate between "O Ring Gasket" and "RTJ Gasket", (RTJ = Ring Type Joint). In piping systems, we define the RTJ for systems characterized by its higher pressure and temperature, and therefore, the use of RTJ means that the gasket shall be metallic, and in no way to use rubber type at that sever design conditions.

Per ASME code, the RTJ gasket type must be specified as per ASME B16.20 (Metallic Gaskets for Pipe Flanges - Ring-Joint, Spiral-Wound, and Jacketed). Users of API codes and standards shall use API 6A which the two standards (ASME B16.20 & API 6A) are equivalent and interchangeable.

Where ASME B16.21 is used for Nonmetallic Flat Gaskets for Pipe Flanges, which can be used in relatively low pressure and temperature compared with B16.20. Therefore, all O-Ring rubber gaskets shall be specified as nonmetallic type even it located at a groove, i.e shall specified by ASME B16.21

Figure reference is "Piping Joint Handbook" by BP Amoco.

Well said about RTJ.

Referring to O' Ring grove: You need to avail a grove about the nominal diameter. The thumb rule for the grove dimensions are: Depth = 0.7 d and width = 1.2 d where is the diameter of the O' Ring.

Please note the grove has to be in only one flange and the other flange has to be flat.

Logically, when tightening the flanges, the projecting portion of the O' Ring (0.3 d) will get pressed to oval shape, the width (1.2 d) of the grove would accommodate the pressed O' Ring.

Do you know, how to calculate groove dimension for 48" RTJWN FLANGE 600# and how to find ring number for gasket ovel type soft iron. I have look b16.21 and api 6a.

my email id mayurmwch2004@gmail.com,please send your response to my email too, because I am not getting email alert and then it is difficult to find thread.

your prompt respond would highly appreciated.
