How Do I Remove Arbor From LFA Chuck?

06/25/2010 12:21 PM

I've had an LFA 85B-J4 chuck (3/16"-1 132") and arbor in storage for several years. I recently examined the unit only to find that the preservative had dried out to the consistency of tacky varnish. I've cleaned the unit with mineral spirits and am attempting to remove the arbor prior to lubrication. Unlike most chucks, the arbor end is not visible so I can't use the standard technique to release the JT-4 taper. How do I remove the d*mned arbor?

Good afternoon, perfectionist

Well, the LFA USA website has a set of instructions here.

It mentions an "Arbor Removal System", which sounds like a special tool is needed. You might be able to drill down in their site a little bit to find more.

(And yes, it was a pun intended!)

Put the drill in the freezer for 4 hours. If you're married or living with a female, put it in a plastic bag. Then, heat the chuck with a torch. Then tap gently with a brass hammer.

That assumes that the chuck has a female taper.

Put the chuck/arbor assembly in your oven and heat it to 200 deg. for 4 hours. Then hold the chuck with a towel or glove and dip the arbor into ice water or liquid nitrogen. If the assembly doesn't fall apart, tap lightly with a brass hammer.

If all else fails, drill a hole through the bottom of the chuck to reach the JT. Use a pin punch to drive the arbor out. Cooling the arbor down with dry ice should allow it to be driven out easily.

Thanks for all your suggestions. The idea of heating the assembly and plunging the arbor in ice water sounds great. I'll give it a go.

By the way, it turns out that the LFA arbor removal system is nothing more than a central threaded hole in the back of the chuck opening into the female Jacobs taper. All one has to do is open the jaws, thread in the correct bolt and tighten to pop out the arbor. I found out yesterday that the previous owner had broken the extraction bolt and tried to cover this up by grinding down the remnant. This left no way to remove the arbor.

I'm pretty pissed off about this because the chuck was reperesented as being new when bought. When I asked the salesman about arbor removal, he said that all I had to do was open the jaws to maximum and tweak them a bit further to pop the arbor. Go figure. I'd been doing business with these people for years.

"I'd been doing business with these people for years."

Is that a trend that might change?
