Setting up a Win 98SE Guest in VirtualBox with file sharing

06/25/2010 10:31 PM

VirtualBox does not offer their Guest Additions for Windows 98SE, which means one does not have access to file sharing between the Host operating system and the Virtual Guest. The way to solve this is to set up a virtual network between the Host operating system and the Guest Operating system. I just went through this rather arduous procedure, and have written a sort of "How-To" that I am willing to share with anyone interested. Send me a PM with your e-mail address, and I will forward a copy of the document.

Well done.

Would it be usefull with regard to running a CNC under Win98SE or does the host windows still stick its sticky little fingers in the interreaction between Win98Se and the printer port.....

Since Samba sets up a Windows style network, one still needs the Windows drivers, which are inserted into the Samba file structure on the Host. I am having trouble getting the printer shares to work right now...

If one is using a newer version of Windows, one may find this issue a bit easier to set up- my problem stemmed from trying to preserve some legacy software that doesn't play well with Windows XP and later...

Why not generate your CNC code in a native Linux app? What is the file format you are using-*.stl? If so, there is a 3D graphics package that can work with that, called BrlCAD- which can also import AutoCAD files as well. Worth looking at. BrlCAD will run on Windows or Linux. It was actually developed under the auspices of the US Army for studying the effects of projectile impacts on armored vehicles- pretty sophisticated 3D modeling, but perhaps not as user friendly as some of the commercial packages. One of the things I like is that one builds an object much like how one would make it- start with a basic shape, cut out another shape, add another shape, until it looks like what you want.

I am intending to use Linux and EMC2 eventually.

So I gather that real time is not quite "real"!!

Thanks for the CAD tip, I will look into that.
