Number of kvl Loops to Use as Equations

06/27/2010 4:32 AM

so the number of kcl equations i should take out of a problem is equal to the number of loops minus one right? then how many kvl equations am i allowed to take out without repeating myself?

Woohoo, my latest victim. What is it now, number 8 or 9?

Yes, and these are the ones with enough mental capacity to still type. Just think of the others, so addled that they are sitting in the corner drooling and staring at the walls.

Look on the bright side. If they're so addled that's all they can do, at least they can't cause mischief elsewhere.

It depends upon the elements in the loop. If they are pure resistive then the number is the number of loops minus two. If a mixture of resistive and reactive then it is typically the number of loops minus one. But, if a loop is pure reactive and the elements are prime numbers then the problem can not be solved without having two equations per purely reactive loop. It is good that you asked because most professors will not teach this in class and you only see it as a trick question on the final exam.

And wtf are YOU talking about? You say "kvl" one time and "kcl" another, and both are relatively obscure abbreviations. Ask a confused question, get some confused answers.

It seems to have something to do with Kirchoff's law .. an example here..

There are a lot of loops and therefore they will be hard to count. As can be seen, all elements are distributed and reactive. Chances are that they are not prime. Therefore, the OPs desire for a count can be met.

get your equations and use MATLAB to solve them. most real-world circuits have way too many loops to analyse by hand anyway. know how to solve for a few loops (say 5-7), learn MATLAB and PSPICE, and you should be good to go. P.S: KCL is to nodal analysis as KVL is to mesh analysis.
