ELR CBCT Shunt Trip Unit Alignment

06/29/2010 7:11 AM

In a DB the incomer breaker s 400A 4P.........the earth leakage protection s provided by a combination of elr cbct n a shunt trip unit...........now my question s from where to power this elr ? i mean is it from incomer side of the breaker or load side of the breaker..........i usually go with incoming side.. but one of my client was insisting to power the elr frm load side ......so i need some suggestions on this..........

In large intallations for example Important gridstations, all protection relays are powered by fail safe auxiliary power supply of some sort which keeps the relay active although the CB is tripped with a fault on load side.

Neglecting lockout function for discussion sake, any relay vigilant due to availability of auxiliary power supply is in a better position to provide restraint in case an attempt is made to close the CB under fault conditions.

I would go along with you to provide auxiliary power to any of the relays from the feed side of the MCCB since auxiliary supply to any relay from the load side of the MCCB will not be available as soon as the breaker is open.

We had a similar situation with one of our clients in the past. But our case is little different. We supplied the auxiliary power from the incomer side of the breaker but the client wants another upstream breaker trips (along with the down stream breaker) if there is a ground fault occurs at the down stream. The problem with this is that the ELR (Earth Leakage Relay) losses auxiliary power (because of the upstream breaker trips) and the ELR can not be used in fail-safe mode. We explained this situation to the client and then they agreed to eliminate the requirement for the upstream breaker trip.

If your client wants the auxiliary supply from the load side of the breaker, you can explain the same thing to the client and they might agree to have it from the incomer side.

thanks for the reply..........but the client s concerned wit the maintenance ......he wants no active circuits wen the breaker s off........so he s insisting on powering the elr frm load side of the breaker...... i ve done 3 or 4 projects tht utilises elr cbct and i ve always connected them on the incomer side....this would be the first time to connect it on the load side, so i wanna make sure tht it would be ok.....

It might be worth changing the keyboard attached to that computer, as it appears that some of the keys are not working:

Symptoms:

  • The . key seems to be sticking
  • The Caps Shift key seems not to be working
  • The ' key seems not to be working
  • Some of the vowel keys appear to be operating intermittently

It seems you forgot to put an indication light for the fault trip on the panel front that is why the customer started getting ideas.
