Determining BEP for fans

07/01/2010 9:29 AM

Hi all, I would like to ask how would one determine the BEP of a fan from its performance curve beside asking the manfacturer the BEP for that specify fan?

Thank you.

Performance curves usually show head (or P2/P1) against flow and also a power curve. Find the point at which you get the most flow/kW.

Assuming this is an HVAC application, and BEP has something to do with efficiency. Manufacturer's efficiency rating are based on ideal conditions. There is certain to be mathematical relationships based on the fan laws, but at best you establish a optimum zone based on the intersection of the fan and system charactristic curves. Within which should lie a point of maximum efficiency from manufactures' information based on that particular fan for the specific discharge pressure .

Practically speaking, in the field the entry and discharge connections in which a fan is installed has significant effect - generally referred to as system effect factors. So whenever possible it is always advantageous to bring a factory rep' in on any new design or problem.

If your really going to get into fan applications you will want to review literature available from AMCA.
