My mini-project is to look for practical aplications for the joule thief, which sucks a small battery dry. I have a bucket full of AA batteries too weak to drive a wireless computer mouse, but still have about one volt left, which is two thirds of the original voltage.

I would think the joule thief could be compacted into a shape that would be identical to an AA battery. Paired with a weak AA, you're back online with an endless supply of weak batteries. The weak batteries come from devices too picky to run off the joule thief setup.
