2000-2004 Chevy Venture

07/01/2010 11:02 AM

Has any one on this forum had any experience with 2000-2004 Chevy Venture Van jumping into gear or unexpected acceleration when placed in reverse. If so do you have any indication of the cause. (background) Lady friend had two occurrences with this symptom both causing damage to buildings. Replacement vehicle is of different brand and no similar problem suggesting not a driver problem. My instinct suggests that it may have been a sticking solenoid valve and when it did not start to move she may have given more throttle then when it did engage did so suddenly also I understand that oil pressure on reverse is unregulated causing even quicker engagement. Just a thought. Thanks to all that respond.

If I had a car that was experiencing that problem I would take it straight to a dealership, or have it towed. As expensive as the dealers are, it's gotta be cheaper than repairing buildings!

Then why do you care? Call a lawyer and let him figure it out.

I was asked to assist in her defense due to a traffic charge for last incident. Just like the Toyota fiasco where people were imprisoned for dangerous driving due to unexplained acceleration and fatalities in crash then later found innocent. It would help if there were other events of a similar nature to present in her defense. Initially with something like this happens and you are upset it is human nature to think that you may have caused it since you think you were in control.

I have a co worker with Venture. I do most of his repairs, and he never mentioned that problem.

Does the van have a throttle cable, or is it drive by wire?

Have you searched the internet yet?

My daughter has one and the transmission (well actually 3) has given her grief (it is in shop again). After asking several of my mechanic friends, I was told that it is the worst years and vehicles for automatic transmissions made by "Chevy". Gotta hate the newer junk GM put out there.

Yes, I have a 2003 Chevy Venture that I just got out of the shop last Friday (for the 3rd time) and it still has the problem. It is very dangerous; usually if put in reverse, the car can move 2-3 feet before you realize. When my car is "stuck" in that mode, it will accelerate to 42 mph without my foot on the brake. I have the same issue both in drive and reverse - it is sporatic and won't do it all the time. Of course trying to stop a vehicle like this at a stop light when it wants to go 42 mph is hard on the brakes as well and will wear them down quickly. Can usually make problem go away temporarily by turning van off and then starting it back up again - of course this is not a fix.
