How to eliminate waste in Machining?

07/01/2010 11:52 PM

Presently we are doing machining of solid bars to make annular or hallow components. We are planning to shift our production by using hallow bars. But we didn't find same or equivalent material of M12 ( Z85 WDCV 06.04.02 SM80) of hallow bars to switch over. The dimension what we are looking was OD 70 mm, ID 45mm. please suggest me a suitable solution to eliminate waste.

Switch to solid parts. Or request help from your customer.

Try looking for "tube", which is the more usual term for hollow round thingies.

Beware of the difference between welded and seamless.

Hollow Bar is a recognised (European) expression for heavy wall seamless tube, hot rolled or extruded. Stainless hollow bar is extruded from billet and I dont think that that spec is extrudable. A carbon type hollow bar is rolled from a round bar, and many alloy steels can be produced by this process. Trepanning is an alternative, and it leaves you a reusable core; the other alternative is to buy forgings or even make via powder metallurgy route.

We have the same problem here. We are making a 6" dia. flange with a 4 1/2 dia. bore and 5" long in SS. The only solution we have found so far is water jet, or plasma cutting and using the center bar for other jobs. We are quoting this now.

If it is not long then better try to get it forged it may save machining time. I do not think if you can get any seamless pipe of this size and material.

Here is a link to a major manf. of tubing in the USA.

http://www.alloy-metals.com/alloy-metals-alloys.html

Darn! Link didn't copy properly.Just copy and paste.

If they don't have it go to Thomas Net and look for others.

Good luck!
