How often using ASTM or ASME?

07/03/2010 1:45 PM

How often do you use ASTM and ASME for standards and references in your work? Are they usually coming out of your own pocket or your company already have a set fund for it? Thanks.

Like everything else, it depends on the work assigned.

The entire set of ASME B&PV standards can cost thousands, but selected, individual ASTM standards are inexpensive.

Any responsible company should setasside a couple of thousand dollars each year for standards....these are a legitimate, deductable business expense.

IMHO, expecting a consultant or an employee pay for Codes, Reference standards, engineering software etc ..... is simply an abusive MBA's wet dream

It really depends upon the application industry where one is working. Normally working in Petrochemical and Oil & Gas sector and having a job in technical department, ASTM and ASME standards are must to have.

Most of the companies have their set budget against codes & standards / books every year and they purchase updates and other upcoming standards especially for technical team.

The technical team of any Petrochemical or Oil & Gas sector have to refer to ASTM, ASME and API standards very often and Company is responsible to provide them with the same based upon their day-to-day requirements.

When it is mandatory by the owner, or when there is a code item, the material shall be specified by ASME. Also, you can use ASTM specification under the rules as indicated in ASME, Sec. II (Parts A & B).

In some cases, when we specify the material in accordance with ASME specifications, may be there are additional requirements over its requirements when specified by ASTM.

..................................

Also, Table U-3 of ASME BPVC, Sec. VIII, Div. 1 indicates the year of acceptable edition of referenced standards.

.................................

May be the cost of ASTM material is cheaper than its cost when specified by ASAME.

Note that the ASME material covers and recognized only through a limited range of ASTM material, ans ASME material are required only when there is a need for a code item.
