Level Indicator Approvals UL Or FM

07/05/2010 4:17 PM

Dear Crew,

We have a diesel tank for our fire protection system, we are looking for a level indicator in order to replace the plastic pipe that we already have installed. We are looking for a level indicator which has the UL or FM approval but the suppliers have informed us that this approvals are for electric devices and no visual idicators we do not want to installed switches in order to have the approval, we would like to know if is there any restriction in fire protection system about the level indicators. What would you recommend us.

What's wrong with the plastic pipe that you've installed?

Magnetic float indicators are built to respective ASME pressure vessel specs, but not to UL or FM that I am aware of.

I agree that approvals are necessary for electronic switches or transmitters in hazardous rated areas, but I am unaware of UL or FM approvals on sight-only magnetic float indicators.

I deal with magnetic float indicators, not with glass only sight gages; maybe there's something UL or FM for those.

Thank you Carl,

Do you know if there is a restriction of using plastic indicators with no approval on fire protection systems.

Sorry, fire protection approvals are outside my experience. My suggestion is for you to contact the authority having jurisdiction for this installation.

The example citations below are from the City of Phoenix's Fire Code Summary for fuel storage for Diesel Fire pump drivers. http://phoenix.gov/fire/dieseltankfirepumps.pdf

As you can see, a couple cherry picked requirements regarding gaging cover quite a spectrum:

2.5.6. The gauging openings for tanks inside of buildings shall be protected against liquid overflow and possible vapor release by means of a spring-loaded check valve or other approved device (NFPA 30 Section 4.3.3.4.2).

2.7. Fuel Piping
2.7.6. A guard or protective pipe shall be provided for all exposed fuel lines (NFPA 20 Section 11.4.2)

3. NFPA 20 Requirements
3.1. Fuel Tank – Design
3.1.2. Means other than sight tubes shall be provided for determining the amount of fuel in the storage tank (NFPA 20 Section 11.4.5.7).
