Liquid Level Transmitter

07/05/2010 4:54 PM

In an installation, the pump house and the water tower are 3miles apart. What is the safe method to start and stop the pump using a level sensor/float switch? Can the land telephone line be used? Can it be done by radio wave? Is there any other better method? Can the same method be used to monitor the water level in the tank from the pump house? What are the components needed for a working system, type of cable etc.?

Hello guest,

The easiest way to answer this os to suggest you go and visit your local water supply authority and politely ask to talk to one of their staff. They will probably show you exactly what you wish to see and explain in great detail how it operates.

Level switches will work, pressure sensors will work, ultrasonic level detectors would work, even optical could work with a sight tube. Telemetry using radio, (reliable) land lines, microwave, mobile phones, dedicated signal lines from a PC or PLC and such could be selected depending on the terrain and local conditions.

Obviously you want your power control switchgear and such at the pump site rather than the tank site (to minimise line losses) and the lines need to be sufficient for the power used.

Look up SCADA on the www and you will find lots of ideas for remote monitoring and control.

Voltage drop in cables is a major setback in running cable all along.

One easy sulution would be to install a solar panel with the level sensors along with directional beacon lights for the pump operator to see and act.

Although radio waves equipment is readily availble with different manufacturers and suits your need but do take into account that prior permission from government regulatory agencies is usually a mandatory requiment in most of the countries.

If you can establish reasonable line of sight, radio is best and easiest to install. We have used doppler level controls from Greyline to provide variable tank level control adjustment (other suppliers available). You will need software to establish full control and monitoring (SCADA). MWT Vision is a low cost SCADA control system but there are lots of reliable systems on the market. This gives you full remote computer control. For example, some storage tanks in cold climates like to be less full in winter and can be adjusted accordingly with simple computer instructions and then filled higher in busier seasons as in campgrounds.Hope this helps.
