Lap Joint of Tank

07/10/2010 8:47 AM

We are manufacturing the Tank as per code API 650. The problem is as per design the bottom plate to shell joint is lap joint with bending of plate before welding. So is it required for 16 mm thick plate to have such lap joint? Also after bending the plates there will be gap while set up of shell with bottom plate. So how to do the lap joint?

Not all the bottom plate of tank to be fabricated with lap joint. You have to fabricate the Annular Bottom Plate (under the shell) for a width 24" as per API 650, to be assembled using butt welded joints, like the attached figure.

Thank you Abdel!

May I know upto which thickness we can make the lap joint(is there any thickness restriction for using the lap joint).

Our design dept. has given lap joint for all joints in the bottom plate(16 mm & 12 mm Thick plate). Also We are cutting the plates in workshop & shell to bottom plate joint is to be done at site, so is it good to bend the plate (for lap joint) at workshop ?

What is the overall size of the tank? It may be small enough that you can use one flat plate for the bottom (depending on available plate size). BTW, I don't think you want a lap joint. As described, you want a tee joint with a fillet weld both sides and all around.

The size of tank is 13000 mm I.D. x 11500 mm height.

Bottom plate is 16 mm thick & the maximum plate size for bottom plate is 6000 mm length. So how to do the lap joint & fill the gap between shell & bottom plate due to bending.
