1995 Chevy S-10

07/11/2010 12:58 PM

i have a 1995 chevy s-10 with a 4.3 engine in it and an automatic transmission, its the transmission that the gears shift electronically i put a transmission in it but low gear does not work the transmission was taken out of a chevy blazer that was used every day until it was wrecked, low gear worked fine but when it was put in my truck it wont kick in all the other gearsd work fine its a zr3 s-10 i was told that the transmission in that truck was not like the regular s-10 trucks have, does anyone have any input on why low gear does not work and all the other gears do.

What do you mean "it wont kick in all?" Do you mean:

  1. It doesn't kick in when you manually shift into lower gear.
  2. It doesn't kick in when you take off from a stop.
  3. It doesn't kick in when you accelerate (as in passing)

It could be that the transmissions operate differently in the two models, but it seems like extra engineering, extra manufacturing, extra costs. I had a '95 company truck that would not shift low when passing. It was an electrical/electronic malfunction, and apparently a nightmare to correct. So much so that they gave me a new truck.

For starters, Why did you need to change the original transmission?

The days of taking any trans out of one vehicle and installing it in another are over!

Even programmable chips are specific for individual vehicles. Things like if the vehicle is a 2door model versus a 4door model same make etc. There are two questions that come to mind; 1. Was the problem with the original trans caused by something outside of the trans?

2. Is it coincidence that both trans' have no low gear?

I believe your best move would be to get the vehicle to someone who has the equipment and knowledge to properly troubleshoot the problem.

Just what does the trans do when you select "L" low gear?
