2000 Ford Explorer Sport

07/10/2010 8:17 PM

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer Sport 4X4, 4.0 engine. Use to when the vehicle was started the headlights would automatically come on. Rescently the headlights stopped coming on when it is started. What can I check or do to fix this trouble? Can anyone help please?

Thanks Sincerly

Don N.

Check the rotary light switch. It must have been moved from the automatic position to manual. You do know where the switch is, don't you?

Owners manual??????????????????????

I believe we could be referring to the "Daytime Running Lights" . If so, when the parking brake is in the applied position on some models, the switch that causes the parking brake light to come on opens the circuit for the daytime running lights, If this switch is not operating properly it could be keeping the DRL from coming on when the parking brake is in the released position. Sometimes all it takes is to move the wires around at the switch and they start working again. It's worth a try.

If she can manually turn the lights on, that's the switch I'm referring to.

My 2001 F-150 has a setting for automatic on-off. Maybe yours doesn't have that option.

Good luck. You might try a Ford forum.

The sensor is located on the back of the rear view mirror. There is a way to adjust the sensitivity. Its been a while so don't get upset if I don't recall every step.

You will need a straightened paper clip. Turn key on,but engine off. On the bottom of the mirror there is a very small hole. Insert the paper clip, the lights should flash twice, slide the adjuster to the left = greater sensitivity. To the right = less sensitivity. Remove the paper clip and turn the ignition key off. Let us know how you make out.

What is the DRL filament and where is the bulb located? Thanks for your time and patients.

On the rear-view mirror is a slider that controls automatic lighting. A photocell turns the lights on automatically (when the the ignition is on, at dusk) if the slider is not all the way to the left. As the slider is moved towards the right the lights come on with the ignition , and will stay on after the engine is shut off, longer as the slider is moved farther right. The photocell is broken on mine, so they come on even during daylight hours, but they are supposed to come on with darkness.

I have the same vehicle. Have the same problem, plus the emergency brake and horn don't work.

Any connection?
