Natural Gas Air Conditioners

07/12/2010 2:55 AM

Dear Fellow Engineer and Seniors,

I am in need of information regarding Natural Gas (NG) Air Conditioners using small NG combustion engines instead of electric motors. How does an Natural Gas A/C work (For Indoor (Housing) and Plant operation)? What is the basic design criteria? What equipments would be used? What is the flow diagram of an NG A/C? Is this technology being manufactured and if so by whom? I would be obliged if you can advise me on the subject. If there are any links regarding this topic kindly post them as well.

Best Regards,

DG EE

For small recreational vehicle uses, propane powered absorption-cycle refrigerators are common. The names Servel, Electrolux, and Dometic come to mind, and there are others. In these units, ammonia is the refrigerent, water the absorbent, and there is a "buffer" charge of hydrogen on the low side to minimize the total pressure difference.

For some commercial and industrial chiller applications, water is the refrigerant with lithium bromide as the absorbent. These can be driven by combustion or by other waste heat sources.
