1998 Chevy S-10 with a 4l460e Transmission Shifting Issue

07/15/2010 7:26 PM

this transmission will not shift in to low or over drive when you pull out it pulls out in second gear i was told to check the components on the valve body and we did and they checked out fine we checked out the 1-2 accumalator and its fine we checked the servo with air pressure and its fine there is nothing stuck in the valve body, we unplugged the wiring harness from the transmission and had it off the ground and the transmission still changed just like it did when it was plugged up could this be an electrical problem. the transmission came out of a 19198 blazer that was wrecked the transmission worked good in the blazer but wont work right in the chevy s-10, its a 4l460e transmission. i would appreciate any input on this if any one knows anything about this type of transmission.

I believe your problem is a mismatch between engine and transmission. Try contacting. Painless wiring at www.painlesswiring.com/ Or F.A.S.T. at www.fuelairspark.com. Both of these companies should help you integrate with your engine, or allow your trans to "stand alone". Good luck.

Sometimes problems are caused by the simplest malfunctions. Ex; A pinched or leaky vacuum tube. In your case likely the engine control module "brain" is not receiving the correct information that electronically shifts your transmission into low. There may be something as simple as placing the shifter into the low gear position and then determine whether or not the hardware that connects the shifter to the transmission is actually causing the transmission to be in the low gear position. If the exterior parts are not properly adjusted, they may actually be causing the internal valving in the tranny to not automatically move to the low gear position. Or the hardware on the exterior of the replacement tranny simply doesn't match up with the travel requirements needed to shift the tranny. Just because they are both shifted by sleeved cable, doesn't mean that the travel of the cable is the same.

I had a somewhat similar problem with an 4l80e. The experts told me to check for corrossion in the wiring connector. That wasn't my problem but then a gentleman said he was almost sure it was the "input speed sensor". Dead-on; that was the problem. The ISS is located just in front of center on the driver's side just above the center line.

As I said, mine was a 4l80e but I think they are similar.

If you can't get it figured out, let me know. I'll dig up the web site for the guy who helped me. He's good and likes to help.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission5.htm

A good read, particularly the parts about fluid and solenoid valves:

http://www.allpar.com/fix/trans.html

Even though the above is about Mopar trannys the principles and concerns are the same.

http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/transmissions_automatics/gm_4l60e_overhaul_kit.html#Common_failures_on_4L60E

Useful stuff pertaining to your transmission. See the chart of common faults. Particularly the entry regarding shify A solenoid and wiring. You'll have to cut and paste the links. They don't work as copied.

Good information, and good reading. But all of these are assuming that the engine-transmission combination was working correctly once. We are not sure of this in this case. Especially when we learn that this transmission is being installed into a car that never had this model in it. This could be a perfect working transmission that does not have the correct electrical information sent to it.
