Astronomy Related Travel

07/16/2010 2:30 AM

I want to travel and see whole of the Europe. But, it is not so easy financially. Good way is to lead some group of travellers and get the expenses covered.

But, there are many travel companies, who offer much comfortable trips.

One way is to use my expertise in Astronomy and use it for visit to astronomically important event and sites in Europe. Thus niche type of trips no travel agancy is organising.

May I request my friends in Europe to let me know the places and event I can enlist for a tour. You may suggest the observatories, which allow the people to visit alongwith other places of interest and events.

Examples: I have visited Greenwich Orservarory. Pisa tower

Events: Aurora from Norway/ Sweeden

Cruise lines will hire experts to lecture on board ship, and give them free rooms in lieu of payment. Astronomy would be a popular topic, especially at sea when the skies are clear and there is no light pollution. One of those green laser pointers would be perfect for that venue. A set of image-stabilized binoculars would be good too.

Contact a Mediterranean cruise line. If hired, you'd at least see part of Europe.

Hi

I went on a 4 days course to : La Ferme des Etoiles - Fleurance - France and enjoyed it. They are specialised in courses , most are at basic levels but some yearly meetings are at quite high level. May be you could offer them your services ?

In Portugal = I recall also seeing the advert for a Bed and Breakfast / hotel ; it is geared up for astronomy with several telescopes in garden.

Good luck

Cordialement

Avionna

p.s. keep in touch....I am going to New Zealand to be "girl friday" on a new budding private astronomy cultural project. When you have done Europe you might do the Antipodes.... :-) :-) :-)

There are certainly hundreds of places to visit, so any kind of list would be time consuming to create, especially since only you know what your resources are and what your interests are. Jenam is a meeting for European astronomers. The list of participants and their institutions, linked below, should give you many ideas of where to visit.

If it were me, I'd also want to visit some places of historical interest where famous scientists worked such as Galileo, Kepler, Copernicus, Foucault, Newton, Tycho.

From Sleepy.

I was on a cruise ship in the Caribbean and found that the cruise team were doing a short Astronomy/Navigation session which ended with the prospect of holding a real sextant in your hand and taking a sunsight.

Incroyable.

It was my turn with the sextant, I had it in my hand, and was just about to practise pointing it when - the rain appeared from nowhere! We and the sextant were immediately soaked and that was that for that session. We docked the following day!

On another holiday we were in Sharm el Sheikh on the Sinai peninsular, again not quite Europe but follow this - it was the time of the Moon Eclipse a year or three back and I had seen that there were trips being laid on to go out to a local group of Bedouin who were Astronomers and had some nice telescopes. These were reguar bi weekly sessions and not eclipse related.

I wandered around and found a holiday rep and asked her whether we could have a session with the Bedouin and see the Eclipse. An hour or so later - I was on. The eclipse took place at around midnight. i guess that Moon Eclipses generally do! So after dinner we climbed aboard a bus and headed for the hills. Up in the hils the Bedouin had set themselves up a small wood or forest of telescopes and the Astronomer told us what we could expect. The seeing was marvellous in that they were set up high in the hills but in a natural bowl, there was almost no light pollution! The only light was from damped down fires for cooking.

We saw the Moon eclipse, I have some pictures - and afterwards we were shown some excellent shots of Jupiter and Saturn. After that it was 3 am and time to go back to the hotels as we were off back to the UK that morning!

That site is certainly far out!! And well worth the trip!
