Pulse Width Modulator Question

07/16/2010 6:26 PM

I have an old 240 volt 850 watt house hold vacuum cleaner that the motor burnt out on. but it had a soft start circuit board on it with a pot capacitor to adjust the motor speed.

So the question is would this unit act as a pulse width modulator to adjust the Co2 sensor on a car engine. That is a wide band type of 0 to 5 volts.

(1) What is a "pot capacitor"?

(2) Don't you mean an O2 (oxygen) sensor?

Since they removed it, I don't even remember what I said!

The speed control on the vacuum cleaner is likely to use a Triac that phase control the AC voltage to the motor. This will not work on a DC circuit as the triac will never switch off.

The OP OT - said - OLD vacuum cleaner. These have brush motors (series) and work also with if DC is applied. The Triac can be a Thyristor, what puts us in a different light. Regards.D

without knowing further details about the vacuum cleaner, my initial suspision would be that the soft starter required AC input. a capacitor in a DC circuit will just act as an open circuit, you would see no output. car batteries are DC? What you have there is an RC circuit with adjustable resistance (R).google them, theyre quite common, wont do much for you with dc supply though.

Your variable speed control is most likely something like a light dimmer control and not a soft start and will only work as such.

I can't answer the rest of the question simply because I don't understand it, for instance, what is a "pot capacitor" Did you mean a Varicap? if yes how do you want to implement it in a CO2 sensor? and where is there a CO2 sensor in your car? do you understand how does a CO2 sensor work? or, maybe you meant to say O2 or CO sensor? when you have it all clear let us know, we might be able to answer.

Yes, this idea is excellent.

The vacuum cleaner soft start circuit board is very frequently used by major car manufacturers when they adjust their CO2 sensors in a production setting. The pot capacitor is very good for storing up pot for use by the operator of the CO2 sensor adjustment machine. When used this way, the pot is considered medical pot, because the CO2 sensor adjustment technician would otherwise die of boredom.
