Compressor Lubrication

07/20/2010 10:50 AM

Hello CR4 members.

I'm currently working on a LeRoi compressor. The model number is 160RDEJ which corresponds to a single stage, rotary sliding vane compressor with a John Deere engine. The oil reservoir capacity is 4.0 US gal.Lubricating oil recommended must be a high quality solvent refined non-detergent straight mineral oil, turbine or hydraulic type, containing rust and oxidation inhibitors and anti-foam additives.

Viscosity should be rated at 150-200 SSU@100 F.(not sure what that means) The pour point must be 20 F lower than the lowest ambient temperature.

Where can one find this particular lubrication? I contacted the local oil/lubrication dealer with my dilemma ,however they wouldn't help me due to liabilities. Can anyone shed some light on this topic.....part numbers, companies, substitutes, info, etc?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings wasur1,

I cannot recommend any part numbers or substitutes, this would be best left to the manufacturer or a manufacturer's rep.

I found these links on Google after doing a search for "LeRoi compressor 160 RD".

This should be the company web site.

http://www.leroigas.com/

This site appears to be a vendor/distributor of LeROI products

http://www.centralaircomp.com/comp-leroi.html

This is a LeROI Gas Compressor Instruction Manual

http://www.leroigas.com/data/Literature/Instruction%20Manual.pdf

Good Luck!

You may have already contacted these folks: IAP. They claim to have special lubricants available for your Leroi.

As far as Saybolt Seconds Universal (SSU) is concerned; it is a measure of kinematic viscosity. SSU at 100oF gives the reference temperature at which the viscosity is determined. ASTM D 88 is the test method according to the Engineering Tool Box, which has a good explanation of SSU and the relationship of dynamic, absolute and, kinematic viscosity.

Good luck, and let us know if this was any help.

Wasur1,

At work where I am responsible for the preventative maintenance on our air compressors, I found the manufacturers lubrication specs and was somewhat intimidated by all the "oil speak" terminology that left me scratching my head. One day our oil rep came in and I showed him the recommended oil choices for our particular compressors. He was not able to answer all my questions, but gave me the phone number to a person at his oil distribution company that was more than happy to suggest the proper lubricants. Our distributor handles Mobil products. After giving her the air compressor make and model along with the type of usage our compressors see on a daily basis, she told me that Mobil Rarus 427 would be very beneficial. Your local lubrication distributors should be able to do the same for you.

I do not know the LeRoi compressor at all, but Shell Corena S (or any other major oil producer's equivalent) should suit your duty.

Corena S is made using a Group II base oil. This is a Hydro-processed oil.

Your spec calls for a Paraffinic solvent refined Group I base oil. These oils have a much higher aromatics and sulphur content than the newer Group II oils, so I am not quite sure why it has been specified except to say that they would probably be adequate for the duty and cheaper than the Group II oils.

Thanks for the info.I'll certainly do more research to see if Shell Corena S works for my application.
