Using of Squirrel Cage Induction Motor on Crane Hoist

07/21/2010 6:54 PM

I have studied that Slip ring motor are used for high sarting torque on crane hosit also it has low starting current then Squirrel cage Induction motor now one of my friend told me that they are use a Squireel Cage induction with DTC(Direct torque control ).

Well my question is

is it possible to achieve 200-250% torque by Squirrel Cage induction motor

yes it is possible, but there are a lot of fine points to consider, too many to list; it takes a very experienced person on the specifics of hoist applications to do this.

DTC is cosidered indipendent of machine rotor parameters but practically you have to take into account the speed of the motor to be high and the motor to be of low inductance i.e. a specially designed winding.

Yes! In fact, many of the Crane/Hoist manufacturers have shifted to SCIM with VFD only.

You can use Squirrel Cage Induction motor, but please note these motors are specially designed for Hoist Duty. They have high starting torque so that when load is held in between it should be able to hoist. Also these motors are suitable for frequent reversal of the motions. Ordinary motors are not suitable for such functions. Now a days many Crane and Hoist mfrs offer such motors with VFD instead of Slip Ring Motors which are more expensive also they need resistance box, master controller etc.
