It's possible that, that processor and that amount of ram doesn't like win xp. You might have more luck if you can find win95 or win98 installation disc. I'm no computer expert, just a guess.

How did you end up with two partitions? How where these created? Are they primary partitions or logical? Which one is active?

You may want to repartion the disk BEFORE formatting a new partition using XP.

Never allow a partition to be created by an OS that you do not intend to install on that partition.

What file systems are on the two partitions? NTFS? FAT32? FAT16? HPFS? ext2? ext3?

Are there any bootmanagers on the disk?

You may need to rewrite the MBR.

making partition to your hard disk can be done in the first place before formatting occur.. your computer will ask you if you like even 3 partitions or as many as you want depending the capacity of hard disk. yes this are all active PARTITIONS and you can put OS in any part of the partitions. It is NTFS.. NO OTHER BOOTH MANAGER except your windows whom you are using as OS. If your hard disk below total 10 GB capacity.. use fat32

That level of computer hardware will be painfully slow with WinXP and any updates. I believe your best bet for useful operation of this hardware is to load a "small" Linux variant like

Puppy Linux

I've used Puppy Linux on similar machines and find it works well enough for general web surfing and light home office use.

it's an indication that the hard drive had reach the end of it's useful life. it may work for a while...but is already erratic as when you reboot...been there-done that. try a new hard drive.

If you have more than one partition on the disk, Windows MUST be loaded on the first partition. It may be that your hard disk partition is too small.

Its possible that you may just have forgotten to remove the XP CD when rebooting, this may cause a hang condition......

If this is not the case, reformat the disk to one partition, then re-install....

Hi al6776bert ,

Use windows 98 bootable cd

1 - boot your pc with cd.

2 - Use fdisk utility to erase all partitions previously on disk.

3 - Create new partions (1 or 2 or as you like) with fdisk. One should be primary and other logical.

4 - Make the primary partion active before exiting fdisk.

5 - Reboot with same win 98 cd.

6 - Format the previously made partitions with format utility.

Now take good win xp cd, reboot system and boot with it. Do not format again, pass to next level of installation.

Hope it will cure your system problem.

Cheers,
