How far could I travel with too much oil in my diesel van before I have a problem?

Is There Too Much Oil in Diesel Van?

07/27/2010 3:18 PM

Well... it may be time for a little question and answer period.

1) Is the engine oil reservoir overfilled? How do you know? When did you learn this?

2) Who overfilled it? Why is it overfilled? How much is "too much oil"?

3) "...because van engine blew up..." What, exactly, happened to the engine?

A distance of 0 miles, for unless you are filling the diesel engine with oil while moving you already have a problem (too much oil) to begin with!

It is advisable that if you have overfilled your diesel engine oil reservoir (which I am assuming is your question) then you should remove the oil pan drain plug and drain some of the oil out.

Alternatively you can try driving the diesel van as it is, however depending on how much you have overfilled your oil reservoir (and the type of engine) you may run into engine problems (smoking exhaust, performance reduction, oil leakage making a mess of the engine bay, etc), although probably nothing that will permanently damage the engine (although your next vehicle service could be expensive).

Back a few years, I had a Ford with the 6.9 engine. It had an injector that started to leak badly and dropped a cylinder. went back to Ford for warranty repair. The wonderful service manager said it was my fault because it had ingested water and bent the con rod. I told him that the rod was bent from over fueling. He finally agreed, but then wanted me to pay for the oil cooler, because it was contaminated with the fuel in the oil.

Sooooo, Is your oil too full because of a leaking fuel injector dumping raw fuel into a cylinder after the engine is shut off. That pressurized fuel will continue to spray into the cylinder until the fuel pressure bleeds off. This will run past the piston rings while the engine is sitting. Check the oil for the smell of fuel. If there is fuel in oil, it is the dealer's bill if there is warranty in place yet. Good luck.
