Non-Destructive Testing Certification Question

07/26/2010 2:40 PM

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a question that I have about Testing Certification? At my Previous job I got all my required hours of Ultrasonic Testing under a level II also was sent to an agency that fullfilled my hours for Classroom time. I took a three part test, General, Specific and Practicle under a Level III. I have all the documentation of the required hours and tests that I have taken. Now I am in a different job as a Manager/Inspector, but am asked to Test Complete Joint Welds using Ultrasonic Testing. Would I be qualified to do so, or would I have to be directly underneath a level III?

Thank you

Your company has the option of designating you as their Level III without having to go through the ASNT Level II & Level III certification rig-a-ma-role. They need to issue a certificate that designates you as their Level III (or Level II) in UT based on your experience and education, and that is to be placed in your personnel file for the AI's review (if you are doing ASME Code work). This is acceptable for non-nuclear work. Where the NRC has jurisdiction, things get a little more complicated, and a Level III certified by the ASNT is necessary for you to retake the Level II exam under that Level III aegis, and a certificate signed by that Level III. That Level III does not have to be present while you perform your duties as a Level II NDT examiner.
