Synchronous Machines

Please explain the modes of operation of a synchronous generator/motor/synchronous condensor. Please explain how the capability diagram fits in.

The synchronous generator is always run in mode 3. Dependent upon the condenser as specified in the capability diagram the motor may be run in modes 1, 2 or 3 (only one). The synchronous condenser, as just stated, is run in the mode as specified on the capability diagram. It is the role of the capability diagram to specify the appropriate modes of operation for each of the functional blocks (equipment items) in the system.
