Approximately 1000/(RMS voltage of lamp).

Once, again - why are these flunkies wasting our time?

Don't they realize that the questions they're asking are just a few keyboard entries away?

If they have enough knowledge to post a question to CR4, I'm assuming that they have access via their computer to the great big WWW.

P.S. Post #3 is right on the money. - GA - Loupy

First, we have to muster enough votes to undo the OT before any GA's. I did my part.

Something which is considered off topic by some may well be considered a good answer by others. Thus, the non-OT votes must be negated before the GA can be bestowed.

Imperfect as it may be, that's how it works.

Cheers.

#3 was THE most perfect GA reply/response to a very simple posted question.

I don't know why it was summarily dismissed as an OT, even before it was reviewed by his peers (us).

#3 will probably eventually get more GA's on this thread, than anything else posted, up to this point. It's a beautiful, eloquent response to a simple, stupid question that should have been adequately addressed through a simple search on the examples given, and easily obtainable on the WWW.

I hope to see more of these kind of responses to stupid questions, like this one is, in the future.

Thank you all friends ... as i said before, i myself made it OT since it really was not directly answering the OP.... i don't know how you guys managed to counteract the 5 OT votes and then went +3

Very much appreciated. i do hope the OP is not offended though

Yup, definitely a GA worthy response to an almost mundane question. Which I'm sure has been asked and answered several times before.

However one must berate the OP for only providing a part of the information required to generate an answer.

To divine the result properly we need to know what is the operating voltage and (not so important) frequency.

OK I've just done some math for the OP

1000W/260VAC = 3.85Amps

1000W/240VAC = 4.2Amps

1000W/220VAC = 4.54Amps

1000W/115VAC = 8.7Amps

1000W/110VAC = 9.1Amps

1000W/100VAC= 10Amps

These answers have been averaged to the next highest value for simplicity. They are valid for most application considerations.

Don't forget to include the ballast. If you have a 1000 W lamp you probably have at least 65 Watts and maybe as much as 100 Watts in the ballast.

As I learned in high school, dividing the wattage by the voltage is of course the way to find the current.

Current drawn and other characteristics of any equipment(electrical or mechanical/electronic)should be obtained from Manufacturer as the values vary from brand name to brand name and even from model/type/design to type/design/model. Engineers reference books give values for guidance.
