Safe Bearing Capacity of Soil

Hi.

Could anyone tell me how to find the sbc of soil , if we have the standard penetration test 'N' value.

Not unless you specify the soil type.

Not all soils have a bearing capacity. The bearing capacity is highly variable.

type of soil is silty fine sand of medium density

SPT value is 23

density is 1.7g/cc

You need to specify whether the soil is drained or undrained.

Then go to the link given as #1. You should be able to plug to the formula given there for a rough estimate (sbc).

Generally sand is non-cohesive while clay is cohesive. Silty-sand may be somewhat cohesive depending on the silt portion (as a percentage by weight) and moisture content.

Our specs often ask for this test in the feild to verify soil bearing pressures before placement of concrete footings.

The tool they use is a Dynamic Cone Penetrometer

Use the one on the link that takes three people to operate
