aTan theta = x/H where x is the horizontal offset at H and H is the tower height.

What's theodolite got to do with plumb?

Use a laser plumb bob, or a plumb bob on a long braided string.

Hello

Its so easy, the main point is the space availability around the tower. Usually, these towers are in open fields. Take a diagonal and set the transit-theodolite at least more than the height of the tower away from its base. Try to set the transit tripod to align with the tower legs such that they appear one, meaning the tower leg at the front of you covers the tower leg at its rear side.

Once the transit is set in the above position, you can align the cross-hair of the thoedolite with the tower leg and lock the horizontal-plane movment. Then slolwy slide the theodolite vertically, through the tower height, panel after panel to keep in track of the cross-hair in line with the tower leg. This ensures the verticality of the tower at one diagonal. Repeat the same for the other diagonal.

Usually, your eye judgement is the most important part of this telecom tower verticality.

CAUTION: Do not see the tower through the theodolite whilst the Sun is Rising or Setting at the back-drop of the towers. I have had a very bad experience in doing this, I had an glucoma attack on my right eye which has resulted in my right eye' permanent partial vision loss.

Happy tower aligning.
