Small Touchscreen Display Ideas

03/01/2007 12:52 PM

I am looking for a low cost, touchscreen display to embed in a product. We plan to put it in an enclosure.

What options should I look for when evaluating the different vendors?

What sensor type is the best? Resistive, Capacitive, Infrared, Surface Acoustic Wave, Strain gage, etc.?

Must a touchscreen display be "custom" if I want to create key-press areas on the display?

Buckeyegrad2006,

The lowest cost is a conventional screen with a membrane keypad adjacent to it (as in a single row of keys along the bottom, and/or the sides). The key function would be displayed on the screen adjacent to the key. A number of low cost display/keypads are also available off the shelf.

If you are determined to use a "touchscreen", then do some research for your particular application and contact sales reps for demos. There are a number of methods of activation, and they all have their own pluses and minuses, but they are all typically programmable, and off the shelf, rather than custom (which would only make sense in large volumes).

Regards, Greg
