File Sharing ~ WIN XP and WIN 7 Starter ~

07/30/2010 8:41 AM

Hi,

I need to share files from my pc running WIN XP to my netbook running WINDOWS 7 STARTER, using LAN. I'm not able to see the win XP shared partition from my netbook's network places.

THIS IS WINDOWS STARTER, netbook, sony VAIO.

Here it says " You cant create your own home group with this edition, but you can join one created by someone on your network who is running windows 7 home premium, Ultimate, Professional, or Enterprise. "

need help, to enable sharing b/w WIN XP and this starter

Create the home group on the XP box first; create the share; then go back to the laptop and try again.

IOW, you can't share files on a home group that doesn't exist yet and "we are not going to let you create it in Win7 home".

Almost but not quite a "Catch 22". Thanks Microcrap!

Worked fine with my netbook, set up your computers to be part of the same workgroup...

Now you got me curious...

This is an XP machine and I have a WIN 7 machine across the room. I set up the network on the XP and it has the option of making a "Network Setup disk" or some such name. I don't have any disks handy, but I suspect that if you make up the disk on the XP, then plug it into the Win 7 machine, you can connect the two machines together via the "shared files folder".

... and curiouser.

I guess our Win 7 is more advanced than yours. I tried setting up sharing from the Win 7 machine, but it requires another Win 7 machine at the other end. It requires a password to be entered at the "other end". The XP does not use this method, so it looks like the disk method is the way to go... from the XP to the Win 7.

Hope this helps...

I am writing this on a Win 7 (Home) machine networked to an XP machine mainly used for printer sharing. When I set it up I was also file-sharing from the XP machine, but the files have since been moved to dedicated network storage.

Windows 7 (Home) is more restricted than the Professional version, but can still be networked to most systems.

I can't remember all the steps now, but the first is to set up file /printer sharing on the XP machine. Then set up the Win 7 machine with a WORK network, NOT a Home network. (If you define it as a Home network, win 7 wants to control everything and you can't connect with other operating systems.) A Work network allows different operating systems to co-exist.

Make sure you define the same work-group name on both machines.

I may try that on my system too and see if it works.

Interesting!!

To make a network disk (using XP) requires that a disk must be plugged into A: with no other options!! I wonder what brilliant soul thought that up. In my case, I do have a 3 1/2" floppy which can be plugged into a USB port, but it has been some time since I have had a machine with an A drive. AND of course, I will have to remove the floppy drive from the XP machine and connect it to the Win 7 machine to even read the floppy. I would much rather burn a CD.

Success? First of all, I found an article in the Win 7 help file which explained the procedure for going between XP, Vista, and Win 7 First of all, you set up the XP machine with a proper net name. I changed from "MSHOME" to "OURNET". OURNET could be anything you wanted. Next, I went to the Win 7 machine and in the network security section, I changed the network name to "OURNET".

I went back to the XP and put some sample files into "shared documents". Going to the Win 7 machine, I was amazed that the XP machine came up on the net (after a minute). I double clicked on the XP machine, and the shared files folder came up from the XP. Opening this I found the shared files I had loaded on the XP.

I have not tried going in the other direction yet as the Win 7 is being used, but it looks prommising.
