12V Time/Date Stamp Device

03/01/2007 2:36 PM

Basically I have a system which I need to know the times and dates when the system is active. There is a 12V DC circuit connected to a switch and a light. When the system is active, the switch closes and illuminates the light. I want to tap directly into this circuit with a device that is able to recognize the DC voltage and record the time and date the system turns on. Computer interface via a mainstream connection is required. Connecting via serial and terminal emulator would be a good place to start.

I have searched fruitlessly for a solution to the problem. If you have any ideas or know of any products that match this description please let me know.

Tckephart,

You are describing a simple digital input data logger. By storing the time and date the circuit is turned on and off, do you meant internally, for later retrieval, or "online" and the receiving device (computer) stores the information?

There are a number of ways this switch closure can be detected by a computer, but it sounds as though you are looking to buy rather than build.

One link that has a wide variety of devices, all of which far surpass reading one switched (digital) input for a low as $24.95, (as a complete ready to use starter kit), but without internal storage. Many of their devices have internal storage, but also are overkill in the other features. In any case, here is the link:

Greg,

Thanks for the help. I should have been a little clearer in my description. I need a device which is standalone and will save the data for later retrieval. The starter kit you described is what I am looking for except with stand alone capabilities.
