Pressure vessel thickness

07/31/2010 8:48 AM

We have some column of Material SA 516 Gr-70 and below is design condition and thickness result.

Design Pressure (KPa) 950 720 500
Radius (mm) 2000 2200 2200
Joint Effie. "E" 1 1 0.85
thickness rep. (mm) "T min." 13.83 11.51 9.40
Corrosion Allowance (mm) 3.00 3.00 3.00
Zero Meas. (mm) 18.02 16.02 16.05
Thickness Measured (mm) 14.45 13.1 12.58
Corrosion Rate (mm/Year) 3.57 2.92 3.47
Remaining Life (Year) 0.18 0.54 0.92
Remaining Life (Month) 2.10 6.52 10.99

Pl. guide me if we are going to patch weld externally then what will the thickness of patch plate and what will be the welding criteria ( Maintaining some specific flow /pressure /temp ) to weld with shell. Also shell longitudinal and circumferential joints may across the welding of patch plate, is those intersection point welding is allowed or not.Pl. give some standard reference for this job.

I'm not sure what codes your company uses or what is required by law where you are but here in the US you need to use API 510 and API 579. You'll also need to reference any documents that those tell you to such as ASME Section IX for welding.

Get to reading because I doubt anyone will give you the thicknesses. And if they do, you won't be able to use that to justify your results.

If it is a US or Canadian Pressure vessel as described in ASME Section XIII Div 1 it will need to be repaired by a ASME Certified Welder & or Shop in which case they will have a "Welding Procedure QC manual " that dictates the approved welding procedure for a particular vessel. If you are unsure of whom or what the requirements are you can contact the local "Inspector" as the vessel will need to be inspected and signed off and the welder if not up to date will need to do a coupon weld test per Inspectors approvals in any case prior to completing the work.
