Busbar Size

08/01/2010 7:11 AM

What is the appropriate (right) copper busbar size for 3150A current MV metal clad switchgear, usually we are using 1.5mm2/A. The idea of asking such question is to get more knowledge from pratically experienced engineers in this field, as i think temperature rise test is the most critical test in MV switchgear field.

i would strongly recommend that you DO NOT use such thumb rules. You will be way off. This subject has been discussed many times in CR4, and you will find numerous threads which will be informative.

Temperature rise is of course important, but you need to be aware of the short-circuit effects also. Being MV, you may even need a SC withstand time of 3 sec. Please check out this paper : ect162.pdf

I am constantly horrified that "professionals", and I use the term with contempt, come here and ask questions about elementary subjects that they should already know the answers to while accepting money for performing tasks that they don't actually perform.

These questions should be completely ignored by us all, or responded to as you have done, not with the answer to the immediate question but with tools to arrive at the answer, eventually.

Glad you agree. i am disappointed at the way we are churning out engineers without the wherewithal to survive in the technical world. And not having the curiosity to search the web. In my days, textbooks being expensive, we had to spend a lot of time in libraries to learn such things which weren't in the syllabus...and talk to the experienced people in our line to glean some knowledge..well, c'est la vie

iam afraid that as per CR4 rules, email addresses cannot be given in the open forum. You would need to register on CR4. Once you do, you will get the facility to email through CR4 mail system to me. Then i can help you. Will you please do this? Thanks.

Selecting a BUS BAR cross sectional area for a particular Ampere rating depends on your Panel Design Like:-

A panel with good ventilation or forced air ventilation or lesser degree of IP protection can carry more current in same copper area than one completely enclosed in air tight encloser with no external ventilation.

Same is the case with short circuit rating, same copper area can withstand a higher short circuit current, if we use a better strong busbar support, if phase to phase gap is more, if support to support gap is less.

I hope its clear now? this all depends on ur design
