Hire a good architect -- someone with experience building the kind of house you want, and who also knows enough about geology to do a proper site survey, or who will bring in a reputable geologist to do the survey. You probably should retain the services of a building engineer, too, to help with the tricky details of your plan.

Hire a good contractor to build the house for you. Make sure he is experienced, and check his references. Then check some more references. Go visit some houses he built 5 years ago and see if the owners are satisfied.

Establish a good relationship with the loan officer at your lending institution, so that nothing gets paid out without your OK.

Likewise work with a local building inspector to make sure everything is done properly and is done to whatever the local code requirements are.
