Furan and Furfural?

08/04/2010 12:21 PM

After I read some papers related to the transformers aging, I found two terms that make me confused is Furan and Furfural. What is the difference of two terms, and what unit they use?

'Furans' is a generic term for a family of chemicals. One of them is Furan, which is quite a toxic chemical. This Wikipedia article will tell you more about it. Furfural, on the other hand, is a most amazing chemical that appears e.g. naturally in your body (vitamin C breakdown product) and is a biobased platform chemical from which many other chemicals, resins, polymers, etc. can be made. Have a look at the DalinYebo website which tells you how furfural is made from lignocellulose (e.g. wood, corncobs, sugarcane bagasse). The insulating paper that is used in transformers of course also is made from lignocellulose and that is why you'll find furfural in the transformers oils over a period of time. It is measured it in ppm (parts per million). And just to totally confuse you, on the web you may even find references to Furanics! - CEO @ DalinYebo
