Auto Rust Protection

08/04/2010 4:08 PM

Has anyone had any experience with the electronic rust protection systems available today for motor vehicles? In basic terms how do they work? Are they worth the 800 dollars it would cost to have one installed?

Auto Rust Protection Scam

Is the system you are considering Cathodic Protection?

If yes, these guys (The Corrosion Doctors) have an opinion:

"Cathodic Protection, which is the real name of the technique these profiteers are trying to sell you, has been used with success to protect against corrosion on many structures and systems including sea going ships, buried pipelines, and even reinforced concrete. However, there is an area where the technique has no chance to work ... the protection of cars. Human nature being what it is, many entrepreneurs have tried to use the visible successes of CP to make money by offering car owners devices to achieve such protection. They typically offer these snake oil devices at a price that could be reasonable if it did indeed work. In reality, the gizmos they offer are a lost in the suckers pocket and a gain in the entrepreneur crooks bank account. And watch out, they will disguise the same old gadgets with new patents and glitzy technical names, even throwing in a microprocessor!!"

That just about sums it up. Maybe you can purchase one with some of those blacked-out hunnerd dollar bills you can get for just a few real dollars.

Nice work. The answer is intuitive to many, I'm sure. I can see it working when the roads are salty and slushy and the vehicle is drenched in salt water, but, otherwise useless.

What's up with that egomaniac from the other thread??

My intuition was that the sacrificial anode technique would not work on a car, but I had to look for some credible reinforcement of that feeling.

The egomaniac? Dunno... he sure has a thing for Gurus, though .

post script: Thanks, guys.

Not on a 17-year-old car worth £500GBP, they aren't....

With the cars of the early 40's and 50's the battery polarity was the other way round. these cars did not seem to rust as much as modern ones. or it could that the metal was so thick that it did not look that way.
