Cement or Concrete?

08/05/2010 1:13 PM

Why does the news media, especially recently in the BP oil spill, continue to refer to concrete as cement?

Maybe because it's not concrete. Concrete being a mixture of cement and aggregates. Cement is the binder in concrete. It can be used alone. In most of the oil wells that I have worked on. Cement was used on setting the casing. No aggregates were used in it.

With respect to BP, most reported correctly call the product "mud", "slurry", or "cement" since "concrete" which contains coarse aggregate is used when pumping thousands of feet.

Apart from the BP spill, the general public and the media does use the term 'cement' where it should be 'concrete'. I remember on the TV show, The Beverly Hillbillies granny referred to the swimming pool as the 'cee-ment pond' .

For the most part, Media peeps usually do not possess any extensive knowledge of even engineering basics and terminology....they usually don't even know the correct differences between "cement" and "concrete". Most media types don't even do their own homework, especially the Television Anchors and Reporters, who rely on script written by off-camera news writers who share equal non-engineering traits and knowledge with their reported peers......I seriously doubt many reporters ever correctly Google engineering terms whatsoever.

Case in point: 15 years ago when I was serving as a City Engineer for a small upstate NY city I had to deal constantly with the local "Cub Reporters" of several local newspapers, & TV and radio stations. As much as I tried to give (read spoon feed) them information that a layman could understand they'd always ended up screwing the pooch and flubbing the entire context of what I had tried explaining to them to the point where their articles or news story sound bites were they totally twisted all around lost any validity whatsoever. Needless to say such reporting by the mdeia types ended up confusing the residents of our city a whole hell of a lot! It also stirred up a lot of trouble for Mayor, the City Alderman and myself just because these reporters were always looking to uncover some sort of (mostly preceived) Political Dirt, whether there was some present or not.....99.99% of the time there was none!!!!! I swear that the local newspaper Cubs just like causing or stirring up trouble to see what shaked out of the trees or dust bin! I'm not making this up! Talking about "Cluster F**ks"!!! It eventually got so bad with these Cubs that I stopped giving press interviews and totally banned from my City Engineer's Office!
