Just call Del. He knows all about catching mice.

What is it? Windows? or something else?

Open it up and clean it...same as 99% of electro/mechanical/optical things that don't work.
Try another one see if that works.

My mouse does not have a little ball under it and I catch the darned thing running all over the page on it's own depending upon what type of surface it's sitting on.

If the cursor runs on its own, frequently off-screen, and if it's the keyboard pointer on a Dell keyboard similar to the one below, I've had several go bad over time on several different laptops.

I suspect the sensor used sense forces on the pointer fails, but who knows?

I tried firmware updates, adjustments in control panel, and a good amount of cursing.

Since I don't use the keyboard pointer, I took the laptop apart unplugged the pionter device and removed it. It leaves an open hole gap, but who cares?

If the mouse is an optical mouse, clean the LED and sensor on the bottom. Even a tiny piece of lint, hair, fuzz, etc., can make the cursor on the screen go wacky.

I can testify that I also was a victim of' Wandering Mouse Syndrome Mine was magically corrected as I went thru my last on-line support,Recovery from a MS Service Pack III restore,,,I go thru a rapid sequence of keyboard mouse tricks in-route to the boot-up screen.

Upside: No one can start my computer but me

Downside: Who would want to?

There is another possibility. If you have an optical mouse with a mouse pad with red spots (in an advertisement picture), the optical mouse will jump as you run the mouse over the red spots. Get rid of the red mouse pad as it will cause very disturbing instability of use.

Regards.

1. I have just tested the mouse on another PC with the same pad where it is behaving like a good boy, but as soon as connected to this laptop it started the same behavior.

Seems to be a program in windowsxp SP 3, which I restored some days back due to complete formatting due to a virus.

I remember a program which had choice for user to configure mouse to go to certain positions automatically, like with a save command to go to Yes tab etc.

Now it is provided in windows: which is not clicked.

Thanks to all friends for their tips:
